Congratulations to Year 11 on their excellent results after five years of hard work!
I am delighted to share that Durham Johnston Comprehensive School is celebrating another excellent set of GCSE results. It was a pleasure to welcome our Year 11 students back into school today as they collected their results and marked the culmination of five years of sustained effort, ambition and intellectual curiosity alongside their teachers, friends and families.
Students have once again secured outstanding grades across the curriculum, with 38% of all entries awarded at grades 7–9. This year also marks a significant milestone for the school: 13% of all grades were awarded at Grade 9, the highest proportion in our history. Durham Johnston continues to perform as one of the highest‑achieving comprehensive schools in the North East and nationally.
This year’s outcomes include a number of other notable achievements. 80% of students achieved grade 4 or above in both English and Mathematics, with 67% achieving grade 5 or above in both subjects. Three quarters of all GCSE grades were at grade 5 or above. There were exceptional performances across all subjects, but to highlight a few: in Modern Foreign Languages, one third of students achieved a Grade 9 in French, German or Spanish; in Art and Photography, 40% of students achieved a Grade 9; and in Mathematics, over a quarter of all grades were 8 or 9.
We are immensely proud of all our Year 11 students; from those achieving eleven Grade 9s, to those who worked incredibly hard to achieve grades 2, 3 or 4. Their resilience, ambition and commitment to learning are reflected in these exceptional results. These results highlight the strength of our comprehensive ethos: students of all starting points and abilities have made impressive progress and achieved outcomes that genuinely reflect their hard work and determination. I am proud of the quality of teaching and support provided by our dedicated staff, whose expertise and care have enabled students across the ability range to excel at Durham Johnston.
The breadth of achievement this year also reflects the richness of school life at Durham Johnston. Alongside strong examination results and a diverse curriculum, students have benefited from opportunities across sport, performing arts, leadership, service and an extensive range of extra‑curricular and super‑curricular activities.
We wish all of students all the best as they begin the next stage of their education, training or employment. Their results are outstanding, and we are incredibly proud of their achievements. We are thrilled that a high percentage of Year 11 will be continuing their studies with us at A Level. As for those leaving us for their next steps, we will continue to offer support as Durham Johnston will always be their school. Congratulations Year 11 – it has been a pleasure to have you as part of our school community.
