Welcome to Durham Johnston Comprehensive School.

During the current situation we’re using our website to help us communicate with people and below you should find some key information for children joining us in Year 7 in September 2020.

Form Groups September 2020

Form groups are central to our Pastoral Support system at Durham Johnston. We work very closely with all of our primary partners when planning form classes and our emphasis is upon students making new friends. Durham Johnston is a comprehensive school and we make sure that each form class has students from a variety of primary schools and who live in different parts of our catchment areas.

Induction information, June 2020

In normal circumstances, we would hold information evenings for our new starters in June. As we are unable to do this, the video below has the main content of the presentation you would have seen, explained by Mr O'Sullivan. Please do watch the whole video, as it covers many of the questions and concerns we typically hear from parents joining our school community.

Preparing to change schools is always a very exciting prospect and we want to ensure that all students feel confident when making that transition. We hope that coming to Durham Johnston in September is something that everyone looks forward to, and we hope to share additional information on this section of our website in the summer term, so that students can start to access the range of opportunities that we offer. In the coming weeks we'll be adding more information here so please keep checking back.

Below you should find the following documents:

  • Letter from the Headteacher - this was included in your admission pack.
  • General information
  • Life at Durham Johnston Comprehensive School – a useful guide to what it’s like to be a pupil here on a day to day basis which answer many common questions.
  • Uniform Policy – what to wear, why we value uniform and where you might buy it.
  • Music Tuition Transition Letter this is for the parents/carers of pupils starting in September who currently receive tuition from Durham Music Service.

Our usual parental information evenings cannot be held this year, but we are committed to meeting with you all when Durham Johnston re-opens. We are planning for additional induction opportunities for students so that everyone has a chance to become familiar with the school, our staff and their classmates before other year groups return.

We look forward to welcoming everyone to the school in September 2020 and wish you all good health and best wishes in the coming weeks.

School Transport

Please note that all enquiries concerning school transport should be directed to County Hall; we are not able to help with this.

Information about home to school transport for Secondary School pupils, including contact details, can be found here on the County Council Website.

Documents for New Year Sevens September 2020

Welcome Year 6!

We know that starting secondary school can be a bit scary, and that you've probably got lots of questions about what life at Durham Johnston Comprehensive will be like...so we got some of our experts to answer some of the most common ones for you!

Mr Simpson, Year Leader for our new Year 7 starters, has put together a guide to life at Durham Johnston; it doesn't cover everything, but does give you a flavour of what life will be like! He has also written a letter to all our new starters, which you can find below.

A common worry we hear about is getting lost; our buildings can seem very big when you first arrive! We also know that this may seem worse this year as you won't be able to do the visits we usually arrange. We've put together an interactive map so you can have a look at some of the classrooms and start to understand how the building is laid out. It's colour-coded - click on the coloured circles to take you to a page of the same colour. Click here to explore it!
